I am African
Yes I knowThat the bonds are broken
And the new dawn has come
The Old Ones have spoken,
And I hear the drum.
But
Don’t say I am free now,
Say, rather, I am me now.
Free now to see
What I want to be.
I treasure the time
Of the hut and fire.
These will be mine
Beyond all desire.
It’s the soul of the land,
Earth turned by my hand,
The sun and the rain
That call out my name.
Praise those who have gone before.
Praise to those who opened the door.
In thanks and pride we unite,
Head held high, I follow their light.
I speak and am heard. I rejoice, I belong.
We sing out loud, the world hears our song.
But
Don’t say I am free now,
Say, rather, I am me now
Part of my people and they of me
Together we are African free
Here where it began.
I am proud,
I am African.
